Missed our James Beard Panel?
Our 2024 James Beard panel “It Takes a Village” navigated the challenges and triumphs of balancing parenthood with a career in the demanding restaurant industry. With our esteemed panelists, we explored strategies for achieving work-life balance, nurturing family connections, and fostering a supportive community within the culinary culture.
Research conducted with It’s Working Project informed our questions and led us to candid conversations about the struggles at the heart of this nationwide issue. The survey taken by national sample parents in the industry showcased how overwhelming and career-damaging the lack of access to childcare continues to be, a truth echoed by our panelists. Additional needs included flexible schedules, more benefits, mental health services, and more.
“It takes a village to raise a family and to open a restaurant, and Detroit became our village.”
Chef Hamissi Mamba, Baobab Fare
“After raising our twins by myself in a women’s shelter for two years, my husband then became a stay-at-home dad to care for our children while I worked to raise money for our restaurant.”
Chef Nadia Nijimbre, Baobab Fare
“Take time to care for yourself. You can’t take care of your children or your restaurant if you don’t prioritize self care.”
Chef Ann Ahmed, Kamma Hospitality
“My mentor encouraged me to make more of an effort with my partner, to create a strong foundation for our family and our children.
That’s why we’re switching to brunch-only service.”
Chef Darnell Reed, Luella’s Southern Kitchen
